There are some big changes coming to Hamilton’s public transit system in the coming weeks as the HSR seeks to return to some form of normalcy amid the COVID-19 pandemic

Some of the biggest changes are coming next Monday (June 22).

At that time, HSR customers will be required to wear a non-medical mask while riding the bus, taking DARTS and using TRANSCAB, a press release from the City of Hamilton says.

There are some exceptions to this rule. In keeping with recommendations from the province, an exception will be made for anyone who is unable to remove a non-medical mask without help and:
Children under the age of two (2)
People who have difficulty breathing

The City says that HSR will not deny anyone a ride.

Earlier this month, the director of Hamilton’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), Paul Johnson, said: “[Wearing a mask] is a requirement we hope people will adhere to,” noting that operators will not be asking for doctor’s notes or proof of a medical condition.

At the same time, the HSR will begin to increase bus capacity to two-thirds and will continue to add supplemental service on busier routes to help minimize crowding and potential customer pass-bys, the release says.

Polycarbonate driver compartment shields are also being installed on buses as an additional measure to protect operators and customers.

After three months of not collecting fares from customers, the HSR will resume collection starting on July 1, 2020.

The City says all details are being finalized and further updates will be shared this week.
