Hamilton’s worst COVID-19 outbreak has officially been declared over.

Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) Tweeted out Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 20) that the outbreak at Grace Villa Long-Term Care Home on the East Mountain has been declared over.

The outbreak sickened 234 people — 144 residents, 88 staff members and two visitors — and claimed the lives of 44 people as it raged through the facility for close to two months.

Public Health Services declared the outbreak on Nov. 25, 2020.

In mid-December, Hamilton Health Sciences assumed temporary operational oversight of Grace Villa to help manage the ongoing outbreak, following a Ministry of Health agreement.

In a notice posted to the HHS Hub and shared in the Tweet, the health-care provider says that some staff remain on-site at the facility but in a reduced capacity.

“HHS is incredibly grateful to our staff who have participated in this challenging assignment,” the Hub notice said.

“This declaration is a direct reflection of your hard work, commitment and professionalism to enter an unfamiliar environment and work collaboratively with staff, management and residents at the home.”
