With the number of COVID-19 cases continuing to rise, and more Ontarians being hospitalized due to the virus, Ontario’s doctors are urging the public to follow the health protocols out in place by the Province.

With many hospitals, particularly those in the GTHA already at capacity due to the rise in cases caused by the second wave of the virus, doctors are calling for Ontarians to take the virus seriously, and refrain from disobeying instructions from public health officials.

In addition to encouraging current health measures, such as frequent hand washing, wearing a mask when inside enclosed public spaces, and maintaining a distance of six feet from strangers whenever possible, Ontario’s doctors are also urging residents to refrain from in-person get-togethers with friends and family over the holidays.

“This doesn’t mean you can’t connect with friends and family. Explore virtual options for celebrating together and create new virtual holiday traditions,” reads a statement from the Ontario Medical Association (OMA).

Additionally, the OMA is urging Ontarians to refrain from travelling over the holidays—both internationally and domestically—as it can increase the risk of spreading the virus to other regions, as well as bringing it back to the traveller’s own community.

Further, with the isolation many may experience this holiday season, the OMA is urging Ontarians to monitor their mental health, and seek additional support if they need it, rather than ignoring it.

“We know it is not easy, especially during the holiday season, but if we all follow public health advice, we can help stop the spread of COVID-19,” the statement continues.
