When it comes to cars, are you thinking of going electric?

A recent survey from KPMG Canada found 68 per cent of Canadians who intend to buy a new car within the next five years are likely to buy an electric vehicle (EV)—either pure or hybrid.

However, despite the rise in interest in EVs, there are still concerns related to lack of consistent charging infrastructure, battery life and range, and purchase price.

Based on the findings, younger Canadians are much more likely to purchase an EV compared to older Canadians—79 per cent of Canadians between the ages of 18 and 44 said they were likely or very likely to buy an EV in the next five years, compared to just 58 per cent of those over 45.

Additionally, 89 per cent want EV charging stations installed at “every gas station,” and 83 per cent of respondents feel car manufacturers should be required to invest in a national charging infrastructure.

Further, 61 per cent said the pandemic has made them realize they need their own, personal vehicle, as they would rather drive than take public transportation.

“Canada’s automotive industry is nearing the tipping point, with nearly 70 per cent of Canadians indicating that they’re looking to buy an electric vehicle not in a decade’s time but in the next five years,” Peter Hatges, partner and national sector leader of Automotive with KPMG in Canada, said in a news release.

“Our poll research illustrates huge consumer demand in Canada for EVs, putting the onus on manufacturers and governments alike to shift gears not only to meet the expected surge in EV sales but to invest heavily in the necessary infrastructure,” he continued.
