The scamming of 95-year-old Hamilton resident has brought charges against two Brampton men.

Hamilton police say the Crime Against Seniors Unit (CASU) began their investigation in September after they learned the victim paid a large amount of money in order to avoid being arrested, a situation created as part of the scam.

Then in October, police searched a Brampton home as part of the investigation which led to charges against the two men. A further investigation found that an 86-year-old in British Columbia also fell victim to the same scheme.

The two men, age 19 and 26, from Brampton, are now both charged with fraud under $5,000 and fraud over $5,000. Their names are not being released by police at this time. They are scheduled for a Hamilton court appearance on February 9.

Police say the crime is typical of current scams where the victim receives a phone call claiming they owe money to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). They say the CRA never makes these types of calls and that the calls should be ignored.

If you have any information that you believe could assist police with the investigation into this crime, you are asked to contact Detective Sergeant Darren Murphy by calling 905-540-6375.
