Hamilton Police say man stepped into traffic moments before being struck by dump truck

Hamilton Police say a 34-year-old local man remains in critical condition in hospital a day after he was struck by a dump truck near a busy Mountain intersection.
In a press release sent Tuesday (Nov. 17), police say they are still trying to piece together what happened but the evidence, so far, suggests that the man stepped into a live traffic lane moments before the collision.
Police say shortly after 9:30 a.m., a dump truck pulling a trailer was travelling westbound on Stone Church Road East approaching Ardleigh Street.
At that time a man reportedly stepped into the lane in front of the truck’s path. The driver immediately attempted to stop the truck but it was too late and it struck the man.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police who had immediately responded.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit was activated and the intersection was closed for several hours as witnesses were interviewed and the scene processed. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Through continued investigation, driver impairment and error along with speed have been ruled out as contributing factors to the collision, police said.
At this time, the pedestrian continues to receive medical treatment in hospital as his condition remains stable but critical.
