Halton Region announced today (January 23) that the first doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been completed this weekend for residents living in long-term care homes.

Halton’s Public Health and Paramedic mobile teams were responsible for administering the doses.

“Protecting the most vulnerable is critical and completing the first dose for our LTC residents is an important milestone,” the region said in a statement today.

“We are still focused on LTC and retirement home residents and will keep moving ahead as COVID-19 vaccine supplies are confirmed.”

The vaccine distribution had to slow down in all regions due to shipping delays from drugmaker Pfizer BioNTech, with the province reporting last week that it would adjust the rollout schedule as a result.

Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health David Williams says long-term care residents, caregivers and staff who already received their first dose of Pfizer’s vaccine will receive their second dose between 21 and 27 days later, no more than a week longer than originally planned.

He says the timetable will be longer for anyone else receiving the Pfizer vaccine, with second doses being delivered anywhere from 21 to 42 days after the initial shot.

More information about Halton’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout is available at the region’s website.
