Flags in Hamilton will be lowered in memory of Indigenous children whose remains were found in unmarked mass graves

The City of Hamilton will lower flags at all municipal sites to half-mast on Monday (June 28).
The flags will remain that way indefinitely in memory of the Indigenous children whose remains have been found in unmarked mass graves.
“The horrific discovery of unmarked graves at Marieval Indian Residential School and Kamloops Residential School are reminders of the shameful legacy of residential schools and the resulting trauma,” said city staff in an official statement.
The Hamilton sign in front of City Hall will also be lit orange on July 1, “to pay respect to Indigenous children, families and survivors of the residential school system.”
The decision comes after a First Nation in Saskatchewan announced ground-penetrating radar had detected what are believed to be 751 unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school.
Indigenous communities across the country and many Canadians have been sharing their grief about the deaths of children who attended these schools since an unmarked burial site was found in British Columbia in late May.

Since then, some cities have decided to forgo parts of their usual Canada Day festivities.
