Hamilton Police say early Wednesday (May 13) they were called to the scene of a fire on a commercial property where people are believed to have been living in shipping containers

Shortly before 1: 00 a.m. police say they responded to 468 Wentworth St. N., near Burlington Street, to assist The Hamilton Fire Department with a working fire involving sea containers.

The fire was eventually extinguished and three people were assessed at the scene and did not require medical treatment.

Unfortunately, one dog did not survive the fire.

At this time, police say they do not believe this was a case of arson.

While on the scene, officers observed signs of people occupying some of the containers.

In April, Hamilton Police executed a search warrant at the same address.

An ensuing investigation uncovered an illegal pop-up scrap metal business that was buying stolen scrap metal and selling it out of sea containers and concrete outbuildings in a 24/7 operation.

At that time, police found at least 14 people living in the containers and several bylaw charges were laid:

  • 2 Licensing Charges (operating without a business licence)
  • 6 Yard Maintenance Charges
  • 1 EMCPA Charge (Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act) – (operating non-essential business)

“With respect to charges [related to Wednesday’s fire], Hamilton Bylaw are aware of the incident that occurred overnight,” Const. Jerome Stewart told InTheHammer.

“They will be reviewing the information and we are supporting them.”

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the Division One Staff Sergeant’s Office by calling 905-546-4725.
