Hamilton’s COVID-19-related death toll has climbed to 81 after Public Health Services (PHS) confirmed the death of three more individuals on Tuesday (Nov. 24).

According to PHS, a woman in her late-90’s from Idlewyld Manor passed away on Nov. 22, a man in his early 90’s from Village of Wentworth Heights passed on Nov. 23 and woman in her early 70s from the community passed away on Nov. 23.

Thirty-three people with COVID-19 in Hamilton have died over the past several weeks, the majority of those deaths have been among residents of long-term care facilities battling outbreaks of the virus.

There are currently 17 active outbreaks in the community, including one that was declared Monday at Rainbow Cleaning on Greenhill Avenue in East Hamilton, after six staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

The total number of local cases is up to 2,769 after 26 newly confirmed cases were reported on Tuesday. Of that total, approximately 85 per cent (2,345 cases) have been resolved.

According to the City of Hamilton website, there are believed to be 337 active cases in the community at the moment.

The number of people being treated for the virus in Hamilton hospitals is 23.

Hamilton’s assessment centres have completed 127,377 COVID-19 tests and an additional 24,552 COVID-19 tests have been completed at other facilities. In the last seven days, 2.5 per cent of tests taken locally have returned a positive result, according to PHS.

Data shared by the province of Ontario shows that there are 27 COVID-19 cases being reported among staff and students at 21 schools in both boards across the city right now.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 1,009 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday but the government says a technical issue means the figure is an underestimate.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says the issue also means Monday’s case numbers were an overestimate.

Elliott says Tuesday’s figures include 497 new cases in Toronto, 175 in Peel Region and 118 in York Region.

The province also reported 14 new deaths related to the virus.

There are 1,082 more resolved cases and nearly 27,100 tests completed since the last daily report.

Overall, Ontario has reported a total of 106,510 cases, 90,074 of which have been resolved. A total of 3,519 Ontarians have died from COVID-19.
