COVID-19: Hamilton reports 24 new cases as virus claims lives of two more LTC residents

Hamilton’s Public Health Services (PHS) is reporting two more deaths among residents of long-term care homes in the city dealing with outbreaks of COVID-19.
On Monday (Nov. 16), public health confirmed that a woman in her early 60s and a man in his late 80s, who were both residents of Hamilton Continuing Care, passed away on Friday (Nov. 13).
These bring the local COVID-19-related death toll to 67.
Over the weekend, PHS reported the deaths of five other people on Friday: one was a woman in her 70s from the community (this one was not affiliated with an outbreak at a local LTC), another woman in her mid-70s from Chartwell WIllowgrove LTC, a woman in her early 70s from Baywoods Place, a man in his late 80s from Dundurn Place Care Centre and a man in his mid-80s from Hamilton Continuing Care.
Since November 5, the city’s death toll has climbed by 19, 18 of those deaths were among residents of LTCs.
Cases continue to climb in Hamilton’s LTCs: 120 residents in eight facilities have been confirmed positive as have 70 staff members at 12 facilities.

There are currently 18 active outbreaks locally.
On Monday, PHS reported 24 newly confirmed cases in the community, bringing the total to 2,439, with 1,999 (approximately 82 per cent) having been resolved.
The number of active cases in the community has dropped slightly to 371 (from more than 400 late last week).
In Hamilton schools, according to data shared on the province’s website, there are 35 cases of the virus among staff and students in 23 schools in both boards across the city.
There have been 120,055 COVID-19 tests completed at local assessment centres since they first opened in Hamilton in April. An additional 23,720 have been done in other facilities.
Hamilton hospitals are treating 11 people for coronavirus currently.
Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 1,487 new cases of COVID-19 Monday, and 10 new deaths due to the virus.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says 508 cases are in Toronto, 392 in Peel Region and 170 in York Region.
Earlier on Monday, stricter public health measures came into effect in Hamilton, York and Halton regions as they entered the Red ‘control’ level of the province’s COVID response framework.
This is one level down from total lockdown.
