A green light has been given for official plan and zoning amendments at Oakville’s former hospital lands and Brantwood school property.

A green light has been given for official plan and zoning amendments at Oakville’s former hospital lands and Brantwood school property.

“We now have the certainty we need to proceed with two key projects,” said Mayor Rob Burton.

“Having control of these properties allows the town to protect the character of the neighbourhood and optimize green space while providing for the much needed community centre.”

Town council made the approval on Dec. 5.

Both sites were part of the South Central Public Lands Study – a comprehensive land use study, completed in 2013 that evaluated options for four town-owned properties.

The Brantwood school property was purchased by the town in April 2012 upon being declared surplus.

Council approved a concept plan for the site and directed staff to bring forward amendments to provide for: relocation of the playground to the corner of Douglas Ave. and Palmer Ave.; development of seven detached residential lots fronting onto Douglas Ave.; retention of the historic portion of Brantwood School, if feasible, for a residential conversion consisting of four to nine apartment units.

The town took possession of the former Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital site in April 2016.

Town council endorsed a master plan for the lands in June 2017.

Approval of the zoning and official plan amendments allows the town to implement the master plan which sees: a residential district in the north with townhouse and detached housing; a civic district in the middle with a community centre and park; a seniors-oriented housing district in the south, including a civic space in front of the preserved former Oakville Trafalgar High School, and a passive park space along Allan St.

Council also directed staff to integrate the civic space into the overall design of the site by developing criteria that will ensure connectivity to the community centre and park already planned for the lands.

Building of the community centre and park are the first priority in the development of the former hospital lands.

These new facilities are scheduled to open in fall 2020.

Public consultation about the design of the park and the community centre will continue in 2018.

Community consultation will take place in 2018 to better understand the connections between the parks located in the south east Oakville neighbourhood, including Wallace Park, as part of the town’s development of a parks and open space strategy.
