What’s Open and Closed New Year’s Day in Hamilton

This year, New Year’s Day falls on Friday, January 1, 2021.

Due to the lockdown, however, many things that would normally be open on the holiday are closed.

Also, social gatherings are prohibited and residents are asked to celebrate the holidays with members of their own household exclusively. People who live alone are permitted to join one other household for the holidays.

Here’s what’s open and closed on New Year’s Day 2021:

Open:

  • Some restaurants will be open for curbside pickup and delivery, but with reduced hours, so call ahead
  • Convenience stores
  • Some Shoppers Drug Marts

Closed:

  • Government offices
  • Banks
  • Libraries and museums
  • Community Centres
  • LCBO
  • Beer Store
  • Malls
  • Most grocery stores
  • Hamilton Farmers’ Market
  • Hamilton civic museums
  • Hamilton Public Library
  • Hamilton Animal Services

Garbage Collection:

There will be no green cart, blue box, bulk waste, yard waste, or garbage pick-up on New Years Day. Your pick-up will be one day later if it falls on or after the holiday.

Transit:

The Hamilton Street Railway will operate on a Sunday / Holiday level of service, with service ending at 9 p.m.

GO Transit will run on a Sunday schedule

Due to the lockdown, The City of Hamilton is asking residents to use public transit for essential purposes only.
