A 43-year-old Hamilton man is in police custody after an incident on the East Mountain Monday (Sept. 16) night.

According to police, officers responded to an address on East 36th with regards to a domestic issue just shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.

It’s since been revealed that a man threatened a family member in the home. Police responded to the scene after everyone had evacuated the home and the suspect was left alone inside.

A nine-hour standoff ensued, police say, in which police attempted to negotiate with the suspect.

Eventually, a fire that started in the basement forced the suspect out of the home. When he evacuated, police say, he attempted to flee but was apprehended and taken to hospital.

The Hamilton Fire Department responded to attend regarding the fire and contacted the Ontario Fire Marshal to investigate.

As the incident unfolded, Hamilton residents were asked to steer clear of the area.

On top of the charges stemming from this incident, police say the man had two outstanding warrants related to uttering threats.
