A vigil will be held Friday (Jan. 10) at McMaster University to commemorate those who lost their lives this week in the Flight 752 tragedy.

The vigil, a notice on Mac’s website says, will be held at noon in CIBC Hall on the third floor of the McMaster student centre. The event has been organized by the undergraduate McMaster Iranian Student Association and the McMaster Iranian Graduate Student Society, with the support of the university.

Among the 176 people killed in the plane crash, 63 were from Canada and three of them had ties to McMaster.

Iman Aghabali and Mehdi Eshaghian, were PhD students and Siavash Maghsoudlou Estarabadi was a former McMaster postdoctoral researcher, who had worked in McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences until 2018.

Counselling services and support are being provided to students, faculty and staff, the university says. Nearly 50 people from universities across Canada died in the crash.

At Hamilton City Hall, flags will be lowered to half staff Friday in honour of the victims of the tragedy.

In a statement issued Thursday, Mayor Fred Eisenberger said: “Our hearts break for Iman, Mehdi and Siavash’s families, friends and loved ones. May you be comforted by the outpouring of love and support surrounding you during this incredibly difficult time. Its impact is felt across our nation and we join together as a community in mourning the loss of the victims of this tragic crash.”
