Local theatre groups came together — albeit remotely — to bring music to people in this time of uncertainty.

Members of Theatre Ancaster invited 40 performers from theatre groups throughout the GTHA, to perform the song ‘Do You Hear the People Sing,’ from the much-loved musical Les Miserables.

Performers took to their computers and personal devices and recorded the song from their homes.

The video was uploaded to Youtube on Wednesday (April 15) and it’s drawing a lot of social media attention.

The rendition of the iconic song is nothing short of breathtaking and given the timing, it couldn’t be more poignant.

Les Mis tells the story of a French peasant seeking redemption for his 19-year imprisonment for stealing a loaf of bread for a child and it takes place against the backdrop of the French Revolution.

The tale is one of people coming together to bring about change and fight against oppression and finding strength in numbers.

Today, as we all do our part to battle a pandemic and we stay home or go into those essential workplaces that keep us healthy, safe, fed or transporting us to our jobs, we find our strength in knowing that we’re all in this together.

The outcome of this unprecedented situation depends entirely on us all working together, but physically apart and this virtual production of ‘Do you hear the people sing?’ can go a long way to bolstering our spirit.

It shows that even while physically apart, we are still capable of doing beautiful things together.
