A group of Hamilton Junior and Senior kindergarteners are sharing their appreciation for health-care workers in a very special way.

Miss Evashkow and Mrs. McCallum, two of the kindergarten teachers at Highview Elementary on Hamilton’s East Mountain, gave their students a special assignment this week: health-care heroes.

Evashkow, who told IntheHammer some of her students’ parents and some of her friends work in health care, wrote a poem to honour their work.

Then the JK and SK were students to write it out and read it as well as draw some pictures of what they think a health-care hero looks like and what they do.

Part of the assignment was also to talk about ways the youngsters plan to keep themselves and others safe (ie: proper handwashing, coughing into your elbow, etc) for when school reopens.

Families then video-recorded their children reciting the poem and sharing their pictures. McCallum and Evashkow then combined all the videos into one.

The video, entitled ‘Healthcare Heroes: A thank you from my students’ was uploaded to YouTube on Friday (April 24).

The tribute to health-care workers is pretty adorable and moving and proof that the important work they’re doing is having an impact on all of us beyond the immediate threat of COVID-19.

Check it out below. But fair warning: grab a tissue beforehand.

EDS NOTE: IntheHammer has it on good authority that Miss Evashkow was supposed to be celebrating her wedding this Saturday (April 25) but due to the pandemic, has been forced to cancel.

On behalf of us here at InTheHammer, let me extend our thanks to you and your students for taking the time to make this tribute to our frontline workers and to offer our best wishes for your upcoming nuptials — boy, that will be a party to remember!
