Two-way conversion project in Hamilton’s downtown closes more roads this week

In a press release sent Tuesday (August 4), the City of Hamilton said that as part of the Queen Street South two-way conversion project, Queen between Charlton and the west leg of Herkimer will be closed beginning Wednesday (August 5).
Herkimer, between Locke Street and Queen Street will also be closed for the duration of the project, the release says.
The closure is expected to wrap up on or before Friday, September 11, 2020, if weather permits.

Starting Wednesday, the section of Queen Street between Main Street W and Charlton will be converted to two-way traffic operation.
The city release says that local access to residents will be provided on Queen Street S between Charlton and Herkimer. Local access will also be maintained on Herkimer between Locke and Queen.
The City of Hamilton urges motorists to follow signs for detour or take alternative routes.
HSR customers travelling westbound on Route #6 Aberdeen and southbound on Route #34 Upper Paradise should be aware of HSR impacts, which can be found here.
The massive project, which got underway in early July, involves eight intersection improvements, including new installation or upgrade of traffic signals, roadway restoration, curb and sidewalk reconstruction and pavement markings, a previous City press release says.

- Queen Street South at Duke Street
- Queen Street South at Herkimer Street
- Queen Street South at Napier Street
The conversion project has been years in the making and follows in the wake of other major road conversions in the city’s downtown core in the not-so-distant past.
The project incorporates the principles of Vision Zero, the traffic safety initiative that Hamilton has adopted aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injury on city roads.
The goal is to reduce speeds and overall collisions.
