Two men face drugs, weapons charges in two separate incidents in East Hamilton

Two men are facing drugs and weapons charges after Hamilton Police say they seized handguns, ammunition and illicit drugs in two separate incidents on Sunday (May 17).

Two men are facing drugs and weapons charges after Hamilton Police say they seized handguns, ammunition and illicit drugs in two separate incidents on Sunday (May 17).

In the first incident, police say that shortly before 3:00 p.m., police became involved in an investigation in the area of Barton Street East and Strathearne Avenue in East Hamilton.

The investigation led police to a residence in the area which was occupied by several people. One man was found to be in possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun, crack cocaine and a large amount of cash.

A 38-year-old man from Toronto was arrested and taken into police custody where it was confirmed he was bound by an out of jurisdiction court order.

The matter was addressed at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Monday, May 18, 2020, in the form of a bail hearing.

The man faces the following charges:

  • Multiple firearm-related offences
  • Possession for the purposes of trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession for proceeds of crime under $5000
  • Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Fail to comply release order X3

Later Sunday evening, police say they were called to the area of Weir Street North and Britannia shortly after 10:30 p.m. (which is just a few blocks from the previous incident in the East End).

At that time, they encountered a man who was not related to the original incident. While attempting to speak with the man, police say his actions became suspicious and he attempted to flee but was quickly secured.

Through continued investigation, police found him to be in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun, drugs and cash.

The 38-year-old Hamilton man was taken into police custody where it was confirmed he was bound by a court order.

  • Methamphetamine
  • Fentanyl
  • Undisclosed amount of Canadian currency

He was held for a bail hearing and the matter was addressed at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Monday, May 18, 2020.

He faces the following charges:

  • Multiple firearm-related offences
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Fentanyl
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking – Methamphetamine
  • Possession proceeds of crime under $5000
  • Fail to comply probation X3
