Fish & chips are the comfort food we’ve all been needing these past few months.

Hamilton has a booming fish & chips scene and there’s a little something for everyone and we all have our favourites.

There are the old stalwarts (ie: Parkdale Fish & Chips and Hutch’s) and there are the hidden gems that are either new to the scene or who have been filling our bellies with delicious seafood for years.

So, without further ado, here are the Top 5 under-the-radar Fish and Chip shops in Hamilton. You’ll want to try some of these!

5. Golden Fish & Chips

Golden Fish and Chips has been serving the city for more than 25 years, and it definitely shows because they have perfected the art of cooking up fish and chips. When I visit this establishment, I typically either get the classic fish & chips or the shrimp & chips (6 ounces of popcorn shrimp with large fries), however nothing on the menu will leave you disappointed. When stopping by the establishment, you have the option to stay for a while and dine-in, or if you’re in a rush you can get takeout.

4. The Ship

I know, I know, I know. This isn’t considered your standard English-style fish and & chips, but it was shockingly delicious. I’m referring to the Southern Fried Catfish that are seasoned and coated in fried panko. Very tasty, very light and, thin breading and paired amazingly with the Country Spritz (think Aperol Spritz meets beer).

3. Hammerhead’s

I only tried this place because I thought it was hilarious that a fish & chips place was named after a shark. They offer a great range of Canadian fish options: Vancouver Island. B.C rockfish, Nova Scotia Haddock, and Lake Erie Pickerel. It tasted amazing and I loved knowing where my fish was swimming from.

2. Captain Mike’s

If you’ve been looking for a great fish and chip restaurant you can take the whole family to, Captain Mike’s is the place to go. This restaurant offers one or two-piece fish platters, however, Mike’s also has incredible family fish meals. This shop offers the best value and continues to offer a delicious classic fish & chips. Their Halibut Platter is only $14.99 and includes halibut, fresh-cut fries, coleslaw, a lemon wedge, tartar sauce (I ordered double), and a drink.

1. Harry’s Fish & Chips

My 96-year-old Nan says this is the best fish and chips in Hamilton and she knows best. The breading is thin and crispy and unlike any other on this list. You get more chips than any single person could eat and you have the option of adding on a 6oz tartar sauce side. The more tartar the better. My Nan and I highly recommend Harry’s Fish & Chips.
