Top 5 Japanese restaurants for sushi in Hamilton

Published February 21, 2020 at 2:27 pm

Tell me, what kind of Japanese food eater are you? All-you-can-eat? Rolls? Sashimi? Maki? Nigiri? Or do you opt for the Thai section of the menu? No matter what type of Japanese and Korean consumer you are, we’ve got a top sushi spot in Hamilton for you.

Here are the Top 5 places in Hamilton to get sushi.

5. Sapporo Sushi

Sapporo comes in at number 5 as I would highly recommend the dine-in experience, but only moderately recommend take-out or delivery. If you’re going to do all-you-can-eat this is the place to do it with their extensive menu from speciality rolls to Thai. The restaurant is clean, the service is fast, and you can peruse and order (as much as you want!) on their tablet service. The food and flavours are fresh and delicious.

For delivery, the wrong rolls were sent and the wait was more than an hour for the correct order. I don’t know about you, but this writer gets hangry long before an hour wait. The food was great once it arrived.

Recommendation: Golden Dragon Roll

4. Chef Martin’s Sushi House

Opening their Stoney Creek location in December 2019, Chef Martin’s is the newest on the list to the Hamilton sushi scene. I opted for the Chef Choice 10pc and received 10 nigiri in various flavours. The delivery was fast, the sushi was fresh and the presentation was beautiful.

The Chef Choice adds a fun element of surprise for adventurous types.

Recommendation: Chef Choice 10pcs

3. Ajio Sushi Korean & Japanese Restaurant

This is the first sushi restaurant I ever went to (ages ago!) and it still holds up as one of the best sushi places in Hamilton. The staff is welcoming and the atmosphere great for a date night. The extensive menu includes sashimi, sushi, bento boxes, ajio specials, and my favourite … the Love Boat.

Something about receiving sashimi, maki, and sushi on a large wooden boat brings me pure joy, and not to mention it tastes delicious!

Recommendation: Love Boat

2. Sushi Ya

I’m in love. Am I allowed to say that? The Japanese décor is welcoming and unique. There is the opportunity to sit at the sushi bar and watch your rolls be made or take a seat in the dining area. The staff was amazing and the Crazy Crazy Roll exceeded my expectations. I’m talking a deep-fried California roll with sliced salmon on top and sprinkled with coconut.

Recommendation: Crazy Crazy Roll

1. Paper Crane

Paper Crane wins for overall Sushi experience. The restaurant décor and service are upscale and exceptional. With ingredients shipped in from Japan and Vancouver, it will be the freshest tasting sushi you’ve had. You have the a la carte options or for a more decadent evening, the Omakase. The Chef’s Okamase tasting menu varies from 7-10 courses and changes daily.

While slightly pricier than other options, it is on par with the quality of food and service.

Recommendation: Butterfish & Salmon Tartare
