Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) announced Thursday (Jan. 30) that in partnership with a major Canadian company, they will be replacing diagnostic imaging (DI) equipment in area hospitals.

In a landmark deal worth $270 million, HHS is entering a long-term partnership with Siemens Healthineers to replace and maintain its extensive fleet of equipment.

The agreement includes the procurement, ongoing replacement and maintenance of approximately 500 systems for diagnostic imaging, advanced therapies, and monitoring equipment.

Among them are computed tomography, magnetic resonance, ultrasound, mammography, x-ray, and molecular imaging equipment, as well angiography solutions.

The new collaboration, which is known as a ‘structured as a Managed Equipment Service’ (MES) contract, means that Siemens will not only maintain and replace equipment over the term of the partnership, but will help the hospital train staff and doctors, and co-design new processes so HHS can get the most out of all the new equipment.

The partnership, which takes effect April 1, is an effort to “ensure it (HHS) remains a world-class health-care organization, a press release announcing the partnership said.

“This value-driven approach will ensure our staff and doctors have access to new and better tools so that they can do their best work for our patients and our community,” said Rob MacIsaac, HHS President and CEO, in the release.

“This is a part of our on-going transformation to ensure we remain a sustainable, leading healthcare organization for years to come.”

HHS says some of the key benefits of the collaboration are:

  • Access to new and advanced DI equipment, with evergreen replacement as technology evolves.
  • Increased accuracy, speed and stability of our DI processes, achieving better diagnosis and treatment for patients.
  • Faster urgent repairs and shorter planned downtime of equipment, with fewer procedure cancellations and shorter wait times for patients.
  • Specialized training for staff, keeping our teams proficient as technology evolves and as new equipment is introduced in our facilities.
  • Stable, predictable annual costs for new equipment, without the financial impact of unplanned downtime, equipment repairs or crisis replacement.
