Hamilton Police Service (HPS) has arrested several people in connection to a protest related to defunding the police.

At 4:30 p.m. today (December 2), six people who had convened at Hamilton’s City Hall in the hope of meeting with Mayor Fred Eisenberger refused to leave after business hours.

As the protest continued, the group grew to 19 people, and HPS warned them if they refused to leave they would be arrested.

Eventually, 18 people were arrested and charged with trespassing, which comes with a $65 fine.

Reportedly among those arrested was best-selling author and activist, Desmond Cole.

According to tweets from Cole, protesters were at City Hall demanding a meeting with Eisenberger to discuss defunding HPS as well as Hamilton’s housing crisis.
