Sellers of high-end vehicles are being scammed and robbed: Hamilton Police

Hamilton Police released a photo of two individuals they believe are responsible for three high-end vehicle thefts in the city.

Police say individuals selling their vehicles through Auto Trader, Kijiji, and Facebook were targeted.

“The sellers were contacted by a prospective buyer and arrangements were made to meet,” according to police. “During the transaction, the suspect(s) looked for an opportunity to get into the vehicle alone and drove away.”

Police obtained images of the suspects through video surveillance of the investigations revealed two suspects through video surveillance.

One suspect is a white male, between the ages of 25 and 30, standing approximately 5-feet-9-inches-tall with an average build. He was seen wearing a grey hoodie and baggie blue jeans.

The other suspect is a black male with a large build. He is approximately 6-feet-tall and between the ages of 25 and 30. The suspect was seen wearing a red toque and tracksuit.

Hamilton Police issued the following tips when selling or purchasing a used vehicle online:

  • Meet in a public place
  • Meet during daylight hours
  • Speak with the seller ahead of time and establish a plan, method of payment, route to test drive
  • Bring a friend along for the meet
  • Bring your phone with you and ensure it is fully charged
  • Turn on your location tracking on your device
  • Ensure your meeting spot is surrounded by populated roads, avoid highways and urban if possible
  • Should the vehicle flee please DO NOT attempt to stop the vehicle and put yourself at risk
