The last day for selling HSR paper tickets is Saturday (Oct. 31), though they will remain valid until the end of the year as the transit provider makes the transition to a paperless fare system.

Earlier this year, the City of Hamilton started the process of installing Presto equipment on all buses and now they are up and running.

This transition has been several years in the making: in early 2018, Metrolinx completed the rollout of Presto devices to more than 400 Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Ontario; 30 locations are in Hamilton along with nine Fortinos locations.

The change to paperless will also have an impact on approximately 100 vendors across Hamilton as ticket and pass sellers have traditionally received commissions from the city for selling them, according to a report presented to the Public Works Committee earlier this year.

As of February 2020, 58 per cent of HSR Customers were using a Presto card already as their preferred method of payment.

Residents who are 80 years and older will receive a one-time free Presto Card when they obtain their Golden Age pass for unlimited free transit in Hamilton.
