‘Can we recycle those brown containers from Swiss Chalet?’ is a question some of us might be asking ourselves these as we wade through our various take-out containers.

‘Can we recycle those brown containers from Swiss Chalet?’ is a question some of us might be asking ourselves these as we wade through our various take-out containers.

Well now, the City of Hamilton has an app for that.

The Recycle Coach App can guide you through the process of sorting your household waste into the appropriate containers and help reduce the chance that some recyclable materials are heading to the landfill.

“Whether it’s remembering to take out the trash or figuring out what you can and can’t recycle, Recycle Coach has you covered,” the city’s website says.

The app will answer all your questions about disposing of hazardous and bulk materials properly and will offer tips as to how to handle them safely.

The app also provides personalized service updates and schedule changes affected by emergencies or holidays.

Users will also receive collection notifications with details about what’s being picked so residents won’t miss a garbage day (which is especially useful seeing as how lately, it’s hard to keep track of what day it is).

Over the years, the City of Hamilton has been working towards diverting the amount of waste heading to the city’s landfills.

According to city reports, Hamilton’s goal is to have a 65 per cent waste-diversion rate by 2021. Over the last several years, however, its rate has remained stagnant, hovering between 40 to 50 per cent.

The hope is that an app like this, with its ease of use, will help people keep recyclables and items destined from the green bin, out of the trash.

Recycle Coach is available for free through Hamilton’s CityApp or from the App Store or Google Play.
