The City of Hamilton is set to begin a three-month-long construction project on Hunter St. East Monday (Apr. 19) as it completes a bike lane installation.

Hunter between Park and Catharine Street will be reduced to one lane during the installation of bicycle barriers, pavement markings, curb and sidewalk construction, and road resurfacing.

Motorists travelling down Bay St. may also be impacted as they pass through Hunter.

Traffic signals will also be installed at the intersection of Hughson and Hunter — the location of the GO Centre.

The entire project is expected to be completed by July 2021.

“Motorists can expect minor traffic delays at this time,” reads the City’s media release. “The City’s vision is to have a transportation system that offers a choice of integrated travel modes, emphasizing active transportation such as walking or cycling, public transit, and carpooling.”

With the completion of this segment, Hunter Street will have barrier-buffered bicycle lanes from Queen through to the base of the Keddy Access Trail.

The project is part of Hamilton’s Cycling Master Plan, which helps guide the development and operation of cycling infrastructure in the city.

HSR Route 4 Bayfront, Route 7 Locke, Route 8 York, Route 5 Delaware, and Route 34 Upper Paradise will not be on a detour but passengers may experience minor delays.

Businesses in the area will remain open throughout the duration of the construction.
