Finding off-campus housing and suitable housemates are additional stressors to an already overwhelming experience for many university students — particularly during a pandemic.

McMaster University’s Housing and Conference Services thinks they’ve found a way to alleviate some of those challenges.

It’s called McMatch — the McMaster Student Housemate Connector.

Students can use the online platform to find housemates for their off-campus homes by creating a profile and answering a series of questions to help determine their living preferences and compatibility.

Once the student’s McMatch profile is complete, they will be able to search other users and see their profiles and compatibility scores.

“We’ve heard that a lot of students may have some fear or uncertainty about finding off-campus housing next year,” said Ryan Tse, Vice President of Education for the McMaster Student Union. “We hope the McMatch program helps alleviate concerns about finding housemates to live with.”

McMatch is available to both undergraduate and graduate students — including incoming first-year students.

After completing a profile, students can connect off-line to see if they’d be a good fit.

“We’re excited by this opportunity for students to connect with other students and hopefully make a few new friends,” said Tse.

The McMatch platform is live and accessible via the McMaster Residence Portal.
