Ontario’s police watchdog confirmed on Thursday (July 9) that a 42-year-old man shot by Hamilton Police on Tuesday has died.

In a press release, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the man died in hospital just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, Hamilton Police say they were called to the area of Gage Avenue North and Cannon Street East to reports of an ‘active domestic incident.’

When police arrived, they located a ‘person of interest’ in the case in a convenience store parking lot nearby. Hamilton Police say the man was armed.

When officers approached the man, an altercation occurred and two officers fired on the suspect.

He was subsequently taken to hospital with critical injuries and the SIU was called in to investigate.

The SIU says they are in the process of investigating the incident.

They ask anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
