As of Tuesday (July 21) the City of Hamilton is reporting that there have been 883 cases of COVID-19 in the community.

As of Tuesday (July 21) the City of Hamilton is reporting that there have been 883 cases of COVID-19 in the community.

This is down one from Monday’s reporting. Of these cases, 874 have been confirmed while nine are considered probable.

The highest number of confirmed cases in the last 10 days comes from the 20 to 29 age range. Nine people from this cohort have tested positive. This represents 45 per cent of the positive cases in the last 10 days.

The province reported Tuesday that the majority of new cases they were seeing were under the age of 40.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said 57 per cent of the province’s new diagnoses on Tuesday came in people under 39.

“Ontarians of all ages need to continue to adhere to public health guidelines,” she wrote in a tweet. “Maintain only one social circle of 10 people, physically distance with anyone outside of it and wear a face covering when doing so.”

In Hamilton, the death toll remains 44 as the number of resolved cases continues to climb. Approximately 93 per cent of local cases have been resolved — 817 of the city’s overall cases.

The numbers show there are currently just 22 known active cases of the virus in the community at the moment (this factors in probable cases).

One local congregate facility remains in outbreak mode after one staff member tested positive for the virus last week. Since then, no other COVID-19 cases have been reported in connection to this outbreak.

Meanwhile, Ontario reported 203 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday morning. This is the first time since late June the province’s caseload surged by more than 200 in a day.

Elliott singled out notable increases in case numbers outside the Greater Toronto Area, including 43 new cases in Ottawa and 24 in the Windsor-Essex region. She said 57 of the new cases were reported in Peel Region.

New case numbers have climbed over the past several days since nearly falling below 100 last week.

The total number of cases in the province now stands at 37,942, which includes 2,753 deaths and 33,605 resolved cases.

There were 92 resolved cases newly reported on Tuesday, meaning new cases have outpaced newly resolved cases for multiple days in a row.
