For most of us, in the weeks following the horrific death of George Floyd in Minneapolis it’s been a time of introspection and learning and finding ways to support the Black community during this historic time.

There are a number of ways that allies of the Black Lives Matter movement can help, like donating to an organization that supports Black, racialized and Indigenous people or by directly supporting a business owned by a Black member of the community.

Recently, a list of Black-owned businesses in the Greater Toronto Area started making the rounds on Reddit. The list contains dozens of businesses located in Toronto, Peel, York, Durham and even the Hamilton-Niagara areas.

More locally, Black-Owned Hamont launched this week, a comprehensive list of Hamilton’s Black-owned businesses that provides detailed information on the kind of business, their status during the pandemic and how to access their products and services.
