Hamilton’s 541 Eatery & Exchange has done much to change the face of one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods and the community has embraced and supported this not-for-profit community hub through thick and thin.

Now here’s another opportunity to give one of the coolest and most delicious cafes in the city a much-needed boost during an incredibly tumultuous time.

The AIA Film Challenge is a contest that aims to amplify the stories of design and its role in communities and addressing societal issues.

541 submitted a video to the contest featuring patrons and volunteers of the cafe, as well as Drew Hauser, Director and Architect at mcCallumSather, the architect behind the historic building’s transformation into the 541 we know and love today.

The winner of the film challenge will be awarded $2,000.

Voting is open to the public until October 4.

In the introduction under the video, a brief history of 541’s building is provided along with a description of the important role in supporting Hamilton’s most vulnerable.

“The socially conscious café has become a beacon of hope to the residents of Barton Village offering fresh, affordable, homemade food in a warm, modern cafe setting,” the write up says.

“Since the global pandemic began 541 Eatery & Exchange, has become an even more important community hub, providing over 100 free brown-bagged lunches per day for individuals who have been cut off from their support system due to COVID-19.”

Early this week, 541 announced that their bright turquoise doors will once again be open to the public but only for pick-up. Their new hours are Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm.
