Stelco Inc. announced over the weekend that the company was the target of a cyberattack.

The Hamilton steelmaker said in a press release issued Sunday (Oct. 25) steel production was halted for a short time as they dealt with the threat.

“In response, Stelco immediately implemented countermeasures in accordance with established cybersecurity procedures and policies that have been developed in collaboration with expert external advisors,” the release said.

“The countermeasures taken were effective and limited the scope of the attack.”

An investigation into the incident, Stelco said, is ongoing and is being carried out by the company, cybersecurity specialists and police.

“Stelco is implementing its back-up and recovery plans to fully re-establish its systems as quickly as possible and some business functions may be adversely affected during this recovery process,” the release said.

“In addition to the continued development of industry-leading cybersecurity practices, Stelco is committed to utilizing all available means to protect its operations and customer, employee and business information.”
