Mohawk College has been named among Canada’s top 100 greenest employers for 2020.

Mohawk College has been named among Canada’s top 100 greenest employers for 2020.

According to a press release issued Tuesday (June 16), for more than a decade Canada’s Greenest Employers has been documenting employers that have been working to create a more sustainable future.

The best of these initiatives were recognized as this year’s Canada’s Greenest Employers, which were announced by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers project at Mediacorp Canada Inc on Tuesday.

Winning employers are evaluated using four main criteria:

  • unique environmental initiatives or programs they have developed;
  • whether they have been successful in reducing their own environmental footprint;
  • whether their employees are involved in these programs and contribute unique skills; and
  • whether their environmental initiatives have become linked to the employer’s public identity, attracting new employees or customers.

Mohawk’s extensive recycling program offered in their cafeterias, as well as their disposable water bottle ban on campus, and overt support for students and staff using alternative transportation means, among other initiatives are touted by the organizers of the competition.

“In addition to adopting LEED building standards for new construction, Mohawk College boasts a number of creative features across the campus, from community gardens, honeybee apiaries and pollinator gardens, to water bottle filling stations,” the Top 100 editors say.

“The college is also home to Canada’s largest net-zero institutional building, the Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation.”

The college’s City School Sprouts program, a 10-week program that teaches kids gardening, environmental science and entrepreneurship skills in partnership with City School by Mohawk and Mission Services of Hamilton, is also highlighted as one of the reasons they’ve been recognized.

“We are excited to be named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers, now for the seventh year in a row. In a time of global uncertainty, companies are being asked to reaffirm their commitment to sustainability,” said Kate Flynn, Acting Director for the Centre for Climate Change Management at Mohawk College, and the manager responsible for campus sustainability.

“Mohawk College is proud of our continued dedication and leadership in this space, and will continue to engage our students and staff in creating a more sustainable future.”

The college was also recognized back in December as one of the top employers in the Hamilton-Niagara Region for their support of employee work-life balance.
