Organizers of one of the oldest road races in North America announced that Hamilton’s Around the Bay Race will not be taking place on March 29.

In a tweet sent Friday (March 13), organizers said in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, they’ve made the decision to not have the race later this month.

Just yesterday, the Hamilton Spectator reported that the race was a go.

“With a rapidly changing COVID-19 situation, we are not proceeding with the running of the Bay Race on March 29, 2020,” said a letter signed by race director Anna Lewis.

“Yesterday, we had consulted with Public Health in the morning and were set to proceed but by the end of the day, the situation had changed very quickly.”

Things remain up in the air, however, as to whether or not 2020 will see a race at all.

“Because of this quick change in direction, it has not been determined if this is a postponement or a cancellation,” the letter said.

Lewis said they will be providing updates as they come in but they’ve asked potential participants to adjust travel and accommodation arrangements.

“Hope you keep running, stay healthy, and be well,” the letter signs off.
