A Hamilton woman has been arrested in connection to a Niagara-on-the-Lake incident where police fatality shot a 27-year-old man.

Niagara Regional Police Services (NRPS) said in a press release issued Wednesday (Jan. 6) that 29-year-old Lindsey Archer of Dundas was arrested at the scene of the shooting that occurred on Tuesday.

The incident in question occurred when police were called around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday to the area of Lundy’s Lane and Corwin Avenue to reports of two people found sleeping in a vehicle and a suspected impaired driver.

When officers arrived on the scene the vehicle fled and police followed and made numerous attempts to stop it.

Eventually, the car ran into a ditch near the Niagara River Parkway and Line 3 and came to a stop.

Police say that there was an interaction with a man who was in the car and a short time later, one of the responding officers fired their gun, striking the man who was then transported to hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injury.

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, has been called in to investigate the incident and have identified the victim as 27-year-old Martin Gordyn of the Niagara Region.

In the meantime, in a parallel investigation, the NRPS arrested and charged Archer with several offences, including:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
  • Obstruct Police
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance

Two NRPS officers were injured during Tuesday’s altercation and were treated in hospital and later released.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact either the SIU at 1 (800) 787-8529 or the Niagara Regional Police Service at (905) 688-4111 ext. 1009134.
