Hamilton is set to become the backdrop to a much-anticipated ‘Kim’s Convenience’ spin-off series which will feature one of the beloved show’s favourite characters.

Earlier this week, CBC announced the details of two new series that are slated to premiere in the 2021-2022 broadcast season.

One of the new original shows will follow a fan favourite ‘Kim’s’ character who embarks on a new life and career here in Hamilton.

Nicole Power, who plays the delightfully awkward Shannon Ross on ‘Kim’s’, is set to star in Hamilton-based ‘Strays,’ which has been in development since 2018 and is currently in production.

Power, who is a graduate of Sheridan College, is joined by a pretty stellar cast including Frank Cox O’Connell (Soulpepper Theatre), Tina Jung (Suits, Second Jen), Nikki Duval (Workin’ Moms), Kevin Vidal (Workin’ Moms), Tony Nappo (Pretty Hard Cases), Paula Boudreau (Workin’ Moms) and Emily Piggford (The Sounds, Warigami).

More details about the show are expected later this Spring, CBC said, but one thing is for sure: Hamilton will feature prominently.

‘Strays’ was created by ‘Kim’s Convenience’ and ‘Schitt’s Creek’ writer Kevin White.

The other new original comedy, ‘Run the Burbs’, will star Andrew Phung, who portrays Kimchee on ‘Kim’s’, as a stay-at-home dad in a family that is taking a different approach to living life to the fullest in the Canadian suburbs.

Phung and filmmaker Scott Townend wrote the show, which has been in development since last year.

CBC has not disclosed which Canadian suburb will play the backdrop to this comedy but more details are expected later this spring.

Earlier this month, ‘Kim’s Convenience’ producers announced that the show’s fifth season — its current season — will be its last as its two co-creators are “moving on to other projects.”

“Given their departure from the series, we have come to the difficult conclusion that we cannot deliver another season of the same heart and quality that has made the show so special,” a statement from ‘Kim’s’ producers said.

The show aired in 2016 to much critical acclaim and has gone on to earn an incredibly devoted following across the world.

Just last weekend, the show made global headlines when Saturday Night Live cast member, Bowen Yang, gave a shoutout to ‘Kim’s Convenience’ during an appearance on ‘Weekend Update.’

After he wrapped up his segment by shouting ‘Save Kim’s Convenience!’ the term started trending on social media.

The ‘Kim’s Convenience’ series finale is set to air on Tuesday, April 13 at 8 p.m. on CBC TV and CBC Gem.
