Hamilton Tiger-Cats re-sign CFL Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman, Van Zeyl

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced Tuesday (Jan. 12) the football club has re-signed national offensive lineman Chris Van Zeyl.

“Chris is one of those people who dominates on the field and is also extremely active in giving back to our community off the field,” said Orlondo Steinauer, Head Coach of the Tiger-Cats. “Not only is he is one of the best offensive lineman in our league, but he’s a champion who has performed consistently at a high level throughout his 13-year career. We want to thank Chris and his family for choosing to continue to be part of our Tiger-Cat family in 2021.”

Van Zeyl, 37, started 16 games at right tackle for the Tiger-Cats in 2019 and was named the Canadian Football League’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman as well as a CFL all-star for the third time (2013, 17, 19) and divisional all-star for the sixth time (2013, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19) in his career.

He anchored an offensive line that helped Hamilton post league-leading rankings in 2019 in offensive points for (508), offensive points per game (28.2), offensive touchdowns (50), net offence (7,125 yards), net offence per game (395.8 yards), second down conversion percentage (tie-50.5%), average yards per play (6.84), first downs (398), passing yards (5,639), passing yards per game (313.3), average gain per pass (9.0 yards) and 30+ yard pass gains (31).

The 6-6, 312-pound native of Fonthill, Ontario has appeared in 173 games with 164 starts over his 12 seasons in the CFL with the Tiger-Cats and Toronto Argonauts (2009-18), winning Grey Cups in 2012 and 2017 with the Argos. Van Zeyl was originally selected out of McMaster University by the Montreal Alouettes in the third round, 18th overall, in the 2007 CFL Draft before joining the Argonauts in September 2008.
