A school in Hamilton’s Catholic school board is reporting to cases of COVID-19 among two of its students.

On Tuesday (Sept. 29), St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Elementary School posted to their website that two students had tested positive for the virus.

In a message sent to families, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board said the two students had a common exposure outside of school.

Both students were last in class last Thursday (Sept. 24), according to the message, and the school was informed by Hamilton’s Public Health Service about positive COVID-19 tests on Tuesday.

The students were in separate cohorts and the HWCDSB said the two classes to which they belonged have been sent home to self-isolate for 14 days.

The school remains open and an outbreak has not been declared because the students appear to have contracted the virus outside of the school.

Four Hamilton schools are currently reporting cases among staff and students, according to provincial data.

A student at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School has tested positive, as has a student at R L Hyslop Elementary School and a teacher at Guardian Angel Catholic ES.

The province is also reporting 52 new COVID-19 cases related to schools, including at least 32 among students.

Those bring the number of schools with a reported case to 282 out of Ontario’s 4,828 publicly funded schools.
