Hamilton is considered among the top North American cities of the future, according to a new report.

Recognized as a hub of transportation and innovation, Hamilton was among a number of Ontario municipalities that feature prominently in the 2019/2020 American Cities of the Future report compiled by fDi, a division of Financial Times Limited.

The report ranked 421 locations across North and South America in five categories: economic potential, business friendliness, human capital and lifestyle, cost-effectiveness and connectivity.

As the ninth-largest economy in Canada, the report says, Hamilton is in a unique position to provide the seamless movement of goods.

Hamilton’s airport and the Port of Hamilton, as well as the city’s accessibility via highways and railways and proximity to multiple international borders, the report says, makes it a hub of transportation.

The report points to McMaster University and Innovation Park as examples of how Hamilton is a leader in providing support and space for research and innovation.

“Hamilton has welcomed billions of dollars in economic activity and investment over the past several years,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger, “and with shovel-ready employment and development lands, a newly announced LRT line and a waterfront poised for new development, the pieces are in place for many more years of significant growth.”

In the report, Hamilton ranked:

  • Sixth among the top 10 mid-sized cities of the future overall
  • Second among the top 10 in connectivity
  • Seventh among the top 10 in business friendliness
  • Eighteenth among the top 25 in FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) strategy

Other Ontario cities named in the 2019/2020 report across all categories include Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, London, Kitchener, Cambridge and Burlington.
