The three Hamilton Police officers who were injured while responding to a call of a person in crisis in downtown Hamilton on Tuesday (Dec. 22) have been released from the hospital.
In a news release issued Wednesday (Dec. 23), Hamilton Police said that the three injured members had been treated and released from hospital and were now recovering at home.
The incident in question took place shortly after 3:00 p.m. when police were called to the area of James Street North and Robert Street for reports of a man in crisis who was reportedly wielding a weapon.
Once on the scene, the release says officers attempted to use de-escalation techniques and minimal force to secure the man. During the incident, three of the responding officers were injured and they were transported to the hospital with various injuries to their neck and head.
The man sustained minor injuries before being safely apprehended and transported to the hospital for an assessment.
A 24-year-old unidentified man from Oakville has been charged in relation to the incident. He faces the following charges:
- Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer x 3
- Resist Arrest x 4
- Weapons Dangerous x1
“While police services routinely respond for calls of this nature, yesterday’s incident reminds us of the importance of community safety and the fact that no call for service is routine,” police said in the news release.
“Hamilton Police Service would like to thank the public for their continued support at this time. Although an incident of this nature causes us all to pause and reflect, we are confident our officers will continue to demonstrate professionalism and commitment to the safety of all Hamilton citizens.”
Police say the incident remains under investigation and they are appealing for anyone with video surveillance or information that have yet to come forward, to contact police.
