Hamilton Police officer charged with sexual assault after 5-month SIU investigation

An officer with the Hamilton Police Service (HPS) is facing one charge of sexual assault causing bodily harm.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced the charge Wednesday (Apr. 14) after investigating an incident that was reported to them by the HPS on Nov. 7, 2020.
The HPS had received a complaint that one of its on-duty officers allegedly sexually assaulted a male, according to the SIU report.
As a result of the SIU investigation, Constable Ryan Cole, a six-year member of the HPS, was arrested and charged with one count of sexual assault causing bodily harm.
He was released on an undertaking with conditions that he does not communicate or associate with any witnesses and that he not possess a firearm.
His court date is scheduled for May 3.

The HPS says the officer has been placed on administrative duties and has no contact with the public.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
