Hamilton Police are urging residents to consider their safety when out hiking on some of the city’s trails after they were called in to investigate two missing persons over the weekend.

Police say in both cases the individuals were located quickly and there were no injuries.

“Hamilton Police are warning hikers to practice safety at all times when on Hamilton’s trails and to stay off the trails between sunset and sunrise” police said in a press release issued Wednesday (Oct. 7).

“With fall colours in full bloom, Hamilton Police expect the number of visitors to increase as individuals come to experience the colour changes on trails and waterfalls along the escarpment.”

On Saturday (Oct. 3), police say they responded to two separate missing persons calls between 7 and 8 pm.

One call was to a trail in Flamborough and the other was to the King Road Bruce Trail in Waterdown. In both cases, the missing parties were found within 45 minutes, a police spokesperson said.

Police are offering the following tips to residents for staying safe on the trails this fall:

  • Where possible, stay on the groomed paths
  • Stay away from slopes and edges of the escarpment
  • Visit during daylight hours
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Be aware of the terrain
  • Carry a fully charged cell phone
  • Obey posted signage
  • Do not enter prohibited areas

Also, hikers are urged to respect physical distancing protocols while out on Hamilton’s trails to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
