Hamilton Police investigating city’s 11th homicide of 2020

Hamilton Police say they have made an arrest in the city’s 11th homicide of 2020, after a woman was found dead in a central Hamilton apartment.

About 9.10 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 21), police said in press release issued Tuesday, a 911 call was placed regarding a man needing medical attention in the area of King Street East and Sherman Avenue.

Paramedics and police responded to the area and located a 39-year-old man in need of medical assistance. At the time, one of the officers recognized the man as someone he had dealt with previously and resided in a nearby building.

Police then went about to determine how the man obtained his undisclosed injuries.

Upon attending the apartment where the man is believed to have resided, police located a woman suffering from signs of trauma. Paramedics attended the apartment and the woman was pronounced deceased. Her death is being treated as the City’s 11th homicide of the year, police said.

Members of the Major Crime Unit have assumed carriage of the investigation.

The man remains hospitalized but was arrested in connection to the second-degree murder in of the woman found in his apartment.

Investigators say they have not positively identified the victim at this time.

A search warrant was obtained overnight to search the man’s apartment. Forensic investigators worked through the night, and continue to do so, as they examine the building’s common areas and the apartment, the release said.

Police are expecting to provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
