A Hamilton Police traffic initiative aimed at cracking down on speeding and stunt driving netted a driver travelling more than double the speed limit on a city road this week.

On Thursday (May 7), police tweeted out an image of a car being loaded onto a tow truck the owner of which, the Tweet says, was clocked driving 127 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone in Hamilton.

“The driver has lost his car and license for a minimum of 7 days,” police say. “He also has a future court date.”

With most Hamiltonians steering clear of the roads these days, police say they have noted an uptick in the number of stunt and speeding incidents on the barren streets of the city.

In response to this troubling trend, Hamilton Police launched a two-week campaign dubbed ‘Project Recalibrate’ in an effort to deter the dangerous driving behaviours.

The campaign launched Monday (May 4) and in the first two days, police say they laid 122 charges related to speeding and stunt driving — the incident mentioned above was one of them.

“Our streets aren’t raceways, yet the average speed was 35 km over,” police wrote in a tweet. “We’re encouraging drivers to slow down for everyone’s safety.”

Police also say they’ve laid four stunt driving charges and one impaired driving charge, as a result of the initiative.

Drivers who are charged with stunt driving face an automatic court date, seven-day driving suspension and lose their car for seven days.

Project Recalibrate runs until May 15 and will take place in various locations across Hamilton.
