Hamilton Police say an Oshawa man is facing a number of charges in relation to several ‘troubling’ incidents throughout the city.

On Thursday (March 5), shortly before 3:30 p.m., police say they responded to the area of Mohawk Road East and Upper Wellington Street to reports of an assault.

Once on scene, police spoke with the victim who advised that he was walking his daughter home from school when he was confronted by a man.

Police say that without reason, the man threatened the victim and the safety of his daughter.

The victim instructed his daughter to go home as he attempted to distract the man. The man subsequently assaulted the victim.

A short time later, police located the assault suspect in the immediate area.

He was arrested and taken into custody. Through continued investigation, police learned of two other recent incidents involving the suspect.

One occurred moments before the assault, outside of Norwood Park Elementary School and the other on Tuesday in the area of Dundurn Street South and Aberdeen Avenue.

No physical contact occurred during either incident but in both cases, the suspect’s verbal interactions with the complainants were considered troubling.

On Friday, Jonathan Verge, a 22-year-old man from Oshawa, appeared at the John Sopinka Courthouse to answer to several criminal charges. He is scheduled to make a second appearance on Monday.

Verge is charged with:

  • Assault
  • Utter threats
  • Criminal harassment X2
