Hamilton Police arrest suspect in downtown street robberies

Hamilton Police have identified and arrested a local man in relation to at least two of six reported street robberies in the downtown core that took place earlier this month.

In a press release issued Monday (August 31), Hamilton Police say they have continued to investigate a series of street robberies that occurred between Friday, August 21 and Monday, August 24, 2020.

During those robberies, the victims were walking alone or waiting for public transit when the suspect approached on a bicycle and snatched their cellphone or attempted to grab their backpack.

After obtaining surveillance video, police say they identified and arrested 38-year-old Ronald Fidler of Hamilton.

He was taken into custody without incident and his matter has been addressed at the John Sopinka Courthouse where he faced charges related to two robberies.

Police say the investigation is ongoing as four of the street robberies remain unsolved.

Fidler faces the following charges:

  • Robbery X2
  • Fail to attend court
