A Hamilton Police Officer has been charged with assault after a video surfaced earlier this year showing the officer lunging at a woman.

On the afternoon of February 11, 2021, two officers responded to a landlord/tenant dispute in the area of King Street East and Sherman Avenue.

A camera outside an apartment captured the interaction between the officers and the tenant.

The video, which at the time made the rounds on social media, showed the two officers speaking with a woman who is standing behind a latched door.

When the woman attempts to talk to the officers about the situation, one of the officers cuts her off.

The exchange continues with the woman pressing on with her story but the officer again talks over her and calls her “unreasonable.”

While talking over the woman, the officer warned her that she could be arrested if she damages any of the property belonging to her landlord.

As the officers start walking away from the woman’s door, she opens the door and tells them to “enjoy your bullying of a position,” at which time the same officer who was talking to her lunges at her now closed door.

At the time, Hamilton Police issued a statement in response to the public outcry over the video.

“Public trust and accountability are integral to our work and we are committed to upholding these values,” the statement said.

Hamilton Police said in a press release issued Thursday (May 6) that they have completed the investigation into the incident and as a result, Const. Ian Millburn has been charged with Assault Level One and is scheduled to appear in court in July.

The release said Millburn has been placed on administrative duties and will have no contact with the public.
