A Hamilton mother is facing a charge of criminal negligence in connection to an accidental fire last month, Hamilton police said Tuesday (March 17).

On February 22, 2020, shortly before 7:00 p.m., police say they attended a fire on the 6th floor of an apartment building at 44 Glen Road in Hamilton. The fire was contained inside one unit of a multi-floor high-rise building.

Hamilton Fire located a 36-year-old female in a bedroom and a 3-year-old child lying on the floor by a couch and extensive fire damage inside. The pair were transported to a local hospital and treated for critical fire-related injuries.

Police said the fire has been deemed to be accidental but they say evidence revealed a lack of parental supervision which has led to the charge of criminal negligence.

Hamilton resident, Michelle Vardy (37), is charged with adult criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Anyone with information, in this case, is asked to call Central Criminal Investigation Branch, Detective Constable Rebecca Moran at (905)546-3817.
