A Hamilton man is facing several weapons charges following an incident early Monday morning (August 31) in Stoney Creek where police used a Taser to subdue him.

In a press release sent Tuesday (September 1), Hamilton Police say they were called to a home in the area of Green Road and North Service Road shortly after midnight on Monday to reports of a disturbance.

A man was reportedly banging on the door of a home in the area. Police say the man left and shortly afterwards a resident of the home returned and after hearing about the incident, retrieved his firearm from inside and began pacing around his front yard.

Officers responded and secured the area as verbal attempts were made to peacefully resolve the matter.

Police say, however, that the resident failed to follow police instructions.

The man reportedly then went into his home and came back out a short time later without his firearm and a physical altercation ensued and he was eventually subdued after police deployed their conductive energy weapon.

The man, identified as 30-year-old Jamison Doherty, was taken into police custody and he appeared at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Monday, where he faced several firearm-related charges.

Despite being legally registered to Doherty, police said, the firearm was seized pending the outcome of the court proceedings.

Doherty is facing the following charges:

  • Resist Arrest X2
  • Point Firearm X2
  • Possession Weapons Dangerous
  • Assault with a weapon X2
  • Careless use of a firearm X2
  • Breach firearm regulation
